Following in the footsteps of St. Koloman to the oldest wooden church in Austria.
From CAMP MondSeeLand, a forest track leads to the Ritzen Kapelle and from there it continues via a steep trail to the Schernthan-Alm. Enjoy the exquisite view from there across the Salzburg mountains. Then follow the marked path to St. Kolomans church, the oldest wooden church in Austria. This place is considered to have special qualities and invites you to linger. Descend in the direction of Hochsernerhof, where you will have again a wonderful view of Mondsee and Irrsee. One of the most striking mountains in Mondsee is just waiting to be climbed.
Shortly after starting from the Gasthof Drachenwand you turn right into the woods up to the Thekla chapel. Go across the wooden bridge and turn right. Follow the signs "Drachenwand" all the way up to the summit.
Surefootedness and a head for heights is absolutely essential.
One of many ways to conquer the Schafberg mountain!
At the carpark „Kreuzstein“ a steep path goes up to the waterfall Kreuzstein. Continue on through the forest across streams and well secured paths until you reach the Eisenauer Alm. This path is also accessable with children and provides a unique experience. At the Eisenau you go right, across meadows and into the woods. There follows a steep climb to Suissensee. At the top, the path goes right along the underside of the Schafberg summit. The last part is the so-called Heaven's Gate. When you reach the top, you are rewarded by a breath-taking view! From the Eisenau onwards, surefootedness and a head for heights is absolutely essential.
Beautiful view of the Mondsee lake and across Mondseeland
The hike to the Almkogel begins from the carpark near to the Gasthaus Drachenwand. From there it goes into the woods to the Thekla chapel. After crossing the Klaus stream, keep left and follow the steep climb through the forest to the summit of the Almkogel. Here you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of the MondSeeLand. The hike continues along a forest road to a small lake, the Eibensee. The Eibensee is an idyllic natural paradise. The way back is again via the forest road to the Almkogel and then down towards Mondsee.
